10 Little Questions with Claudia White

When did you start writing and why?

I had always wanted to write but more often than not, my stories remained in my head not on paper. A daydreamer all my life, stories were never in short supply but the diligence to record them came slowly.

What is your favourite book that you’ve written?

My favourite published book is Key to Kashdune; favourite unpublished is Tanuki and the Tricksters because I fell in love with the main character. It was fun to see the human world through the eyes of a young innocent tanuki, who, taking words literally, was often confused.

What were you like as a child?

Quiet but active. I loved to imagine stories and be around animals.

What superpower would you like to have?

Shapeshifting.

Do you have any pets or what imaginary pet would you have?

I have a big unruly dog, skittish cat and two adopted donkeys.

Where do you write and what do you use?

I have an office in the house where my trusty laptop greets me daily.

What happens in your virtual author sessions?

I like to interact with the students, ask questions of them and allow them to quiz me.

What’s the best thing about being an author or illustrator?

Letting my creativity unfold and sharing that with young readers.

What’s your favourite book to read?

My favourite books to read are difficult to pin down. I like fantasy like The Night Circus, Narnia and Harry Potter series;  historical fiction like Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants series and gripping tales that might include fantastical elements like Joanne Harris’ inspired works  (think Coastliners, Chocolat, Blackberry Wine).

And finally, what’s your top writing or drawing tip?

If you really want to write, discover the discipline you need to do it. Learn how to take and give constructive critiques.
