10 Little Questions with Darren Simpson

When did you start writing and why?

As much as I’ve always loved reading, I didn’t start writing seriously until my late twenties. I was looking for a way to get creative without the need for expensive gear or training, and writing fit the bill beautifully. I was instantly hooked.

What is your favourite book that you’ve written?

That’d have to be Thirst – and I’m not just saying that because it’s just been published. I’m very happy with the way Thirst turned out: a culmination of all I’ve learned as a writer, and a fun move into a grislier direction.

What were you like as a child?

Diligent. Thoughtful. A daydreamer.

What superpower would you like to have?

Stopping time. Just for the occasional breather. It’d help with writing deadlines too!

Do you have any pets or what imaginary pet would you have?

My sons keep my hands full as it is, so we don’t have pets at home. But if I could, I’d love to have a goat in the garden.

Where do you write and what do you use?

I write in our study on a laptop. As fancy as it sounds to have a study, bear in mind it’s also the room where we hang up our wet washing.

Thirst is out now!

What happens in your virtual author sessions?

I talk about the inspiration behind my books, give short readings, play humorous games and finish with a Q&A. I try to make my presentations fairly interactive, and also offer workshops for smaller groups who’d like to get hands-on and inventive.

What’s the best thing about being an author?

Seeing your stories take on lives of their own, both on the page and in the wider world.

What’s your favourite book you love to read?

It’s impossible to choose just one. Though out of the books on my bedside table right now, I’m absolutely loving Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

And finally, what’s your top writing tip?

Persevere. Perseverance means practice, and practice means getting good. Perseverance also means sticking to it until the spark of luck that gets you published finally comes your way.
