10 Little Questions with Steve Weatherill

When did you start writing and drawing and why?

I had always drawn since being a toddler. My mother taught me to read and write when I was about 5 and I began adding words to the pictures and they became stories.

What is your favourite book that you’ve written and illustrated?

Baby Goz – it was created when my children were very small and observing them helped me so much with designing the book.

What were you like as a child?

I always loved drawing. Before I could read, I’d make up stories by drawing scenes in sequence. When I could read, I’d add speech bubbles to the characters. The good thing about drawing is that you can draw anything you want.

What superpower would you like to have?

I would like to time travel.

Do you have any pets or what imaginary pet would you have?

I still have the geese who live in my garden.

Where do you write and draw and what do you use?

At home, pencils, pens, charcoal and I scan drawings into a computer and use a graphics tablet to add colour and changes.

What happens in your virtual author sessions?

What’s the best thing about being an author/illustrator?

The Arts Council helicopter to get me to school visits on time.

What’s your favourite book to read?

To read with the younger children, the Baby Goz series. They like to do all the animal noises.

With slightly older children, stories from the Puzzle Tales which I wrote with my wife Susan.

The 3 Little Puzzle Pigs is a favourite.

They like to do the funny voices and the scary “Let me in!”

And finally, what’s your top writing or drawing tip?

Get a sketchbook to make notes, draw and write your ideas in.
