When did you start writing and why?
I started “writing” before I finished learning the alphabet. I would make up songs and memorise the lyrics and tune. Then at age 12, I won an essay contest and received a plane trip as the prize. This helped fuel my dreams of becoming an author.
What is your favourite book that you’ve written?
It hasn’t been published yet and is meant to come out next year. It’s a picture book entitled My Love For You is Everywhere that will be illustrated by Genevieve Godbout and is about the expression of parental love in every treasured moment. I cried every day that I worked on it. My editor cried when she read it. Her business manager cried when she read it. It’s my favourite book because it touches people at their core. It resonates and pulls emotional heartstrings.

What were you like as a child?
Shy. Super shy. I heard over and over that “children should be seen and not heard” and I took that to an extreme. I was also outdoorsy, a loner and a bit of a tom boy. I was also far too serious. Quite the opposite of who I am now.

What superpower would you like to have?
The power of healing. But, to be fair, we all have the potential to heal ourselves and others to varying degrees anyway. Love, kindness and gratitude are some of the greatest healing powers that exist. That’s probably not the answer you’re looking for, but believe me, it’s a superpower.

Do you have any pets or what imaginary pet would you have?
I have a cat. Or rather, my children have a cat. They named him Jam. He tolerates the name… and us. In the past, I’ve had dogs and cats. None of them were named after food.
Where do you write and what do you use?
Everywhere, and usually I write straight onto my laptop. Today I have written on a train. Mostly I write on my kitchen table, in bed on a lap desk or on my stationery bicycle but I have been known to write while walking, while sitting in a jacuzzi and while bathing. Obviously, don’t try this at home with a laptop! Best to use a waterproof notebook.

What happens in your virtual author sessions?
I get dressed up and read one of my books. Before I do, the students help me create magic. But exactly how shall remain a mystery until the session…
What’s the best thing about being an author?
The opportunity to impact others in a positive way.
What’s your favourite book to read?
The title on the left sums it up nicely…!

But my current favourite children’s book has to be Debi Gliori’s No Matter What. My family and I own three copies—as I bought one for both of my daughters and one for myself. It is a touching book about how a parent reassures her child that her love for him is unconditional. It’s comforting message never fails to bring tears to my eyes! (Notice a theme here when it comes to book’s about unconditional love?!)
And finally, what’s your top writing tip?
If you want to be a writer, then write. Don’t wait until the moods strikes you. Write anything. Write anyway. Write now, right now.
Rebecca has so many amazing books to read! Her latest are Goodnight Farm and We’re Going on a Haggis Hunt.
