10 Little Questions With Fiona Barker

When did you start writing and why?

I’ve always loved writing ever since I was at school but I only really started writing books in about 2010 after our daughter was born.

What is your favourite book that you’ve written?

Ooooo – that’s like choosing your favourite child! But I’d probably say that I think The BIG Christmas Bake was my best idea and I love the way it turned out.

What were you like as a child?

Desperate to be liked, I think.

What superpower would you like to have?

I would like to be able to teleport. I don’t like flying but there are lots of amazing places I’d love to visit which are difficult to get to any other way.

Do you have any pets or what imaginary pet would you have?

No pets at the moment (unless you count the fish in our garden pond) but we did have a long succession of rats. I’d love a ferret or a weasel.

Where do you write and what do you use?

I write in my tiny box room at home surrounded by yarn for all my crochet projects. It’s cosy!

What happens in your virtual author sessions?

I read whichever book I’m focusing on then there might be a quiz like Fake or Bake? Or Which Whale? I often do some sort of drawing activity and there’s always a song, with actions of course!

What’s the best thing about being an author?

Seeing the amazing job that the illustrator, editor and book designers have done to bring my words to life and sharing books with readers!

What’s your favourite book you love to read?

It has to be Each Peach Pear Plum or That Rabbit Belongs To Emily Brown… if I’m allowed two!

And finally, what’s your top writing tip?

Don’t worry about whether what you’ve written is good or not. Just get some words out. You can’t polish a blank piece of paper. And read a lot of the type of book that you want to write. Sorry, that’s two tips!

Fiona’s new books are I Definitely Don’t Like the Dark and The Big Monster Bake – out soon!
